Paul the Octopus is an Octopus who lives in the Sea Life public aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany.
Paul, has become known to the media as the "psychic octopus" or "oracle octopus," is famous for his ability to correctly predict the winner of all Germany’s matches in this World Cup. He correctly predicted Spain as the winner yesterday, which maintained his 100 per cent accuracy in South Africa.
Angry Argentinian supporters have even blamed Paul for their World Cup exit and expressed a desire to eat him in an act of nutritious and tasty vengeance.
However, Paul is thankfully in the safe hands of Oliver Walenciak
and his staff. How does he make a prediction? Walenciak and co place two containers filled with mussels and a flag to represent each football nation into his tank. The container selected by the peckish octopus is assumed to be the predicted winner.
According to Paul’s Wikipedia page, he was actually born in 2008 in England. Wow! We actually did produce the star of the World Cup then? Entertainment director Daniel Fey revealed Paul showed his intelligence early on: "There was something about the way he looked at our visitors when they came close to the tank. It was so unusual, so we tried to find out what his special talents were."
We can only assume that Paul failed at possible career choices such as a Olympic 100 metre sprinter, guest host of the BBC’s The One Show, or a hand model - but he has since become a celebrity in his own right as the World’s greatest psychic.
The first time Paul was tried was during UEFA Euro 2008. He correctly predicted all of Germany’s games, apart from the final, where Paul predicted that the Germans would win. They didn’t. However, despite this major set-back, Paul has proved his critics wrong this year with a quintessential display of eating from the correct container.
Our only hope is that Paul can handle the fame - as is there a serious danger that he could turn into another young crazy, mixed-up squid?
